What stays on your device
Your progress (cases solved, attempts, hints used, time spent), what you pinned and linked on each case's board, the notes you write, your day streak, your settings and the time of the last ad are stored on the device only. Your notes never leave the device. There are no accounts, and no servers of ours receive gameplay data apart from the optional world ranking described below. Uninstalling the app, or "Delete my data" in Settings, deletes them.
What leaves your device
- Once a day the app downloads the public list of other Kodalab apps (kodalab.pt). The request carries no identifier.
- When you choose "Share result", a short text goes only where you choose, through Android's share sheet. It contains the case number and title, your attempts, hints and minutes, a result code (DB-…) that encodes exactly those numbers, and the store link. It never contains the culprit or your notes.
- Only if you ask for it: after you solve a case, the app offers the world ranking. If you choose a name (up to 16 characters) instead of "Not now", it sends that name, the score, the date, a timestamp and a random identifier created on your device to kodalab.pt. Viewing the ranking sends only that random identifier and the date. Our server keeps IP addresses only as a salted, truncated hash, to limit abuse. No account, no e-mail, no contacts, no location.
- Ads and the consent form are loaded from Google (see below).
Advertising
The app is free and shows ads through Google AdMob: a banner, a full-screen ad at most after you have solved a case and seen its explanation (never in your first session, and spaced out), and rewarded ads only when you tap a button for an optional hint. Never automatically, and nothing needed to solve a case is behind an ad. In the EEA and UK you are asked for consent through Google's form first, after a short explanation, and you can change it in Settings ("Ad privacy options"). AdMob may use the Android advertising id to serve and measure ads; you can reset or delete it in Android settings. See how Google uses data in ads.
Notifications
A daily reminder is only scheduled if you say yes (offered after your first solved case, never at first launch). It is a local notification created on the device; you can turn it off in Settings.
Reviews
After you have solved a few cases the app may ask Google Play to show its rating dialog. Google Play decides whether it appears; the app never sees your rating.
Purchases
There are no purchases in this app.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Fiction
All people, places in the cases and events are invented. Any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Your rights
Everything the app stores is on your device: "Delete my data" in Settings or uninstalling removes it. The only data about you on our server is your ranking entry, if you joined the world ranking; to delete it, e-mail joel.gomes@kodalab.pt with the name shown on the ranking. For data processed by Google for ads, use "Ad privacy options" in Settings, your Android ad settings, or Google's tools linked above.
